Select Windows B.V. finds solution for network expansion waiting time

Select Windows is known for its high-quality plastic window frames, windows, doors and sliding doors that are produced entirely to size in GevelNed’s factory. Theo van Gorkom, owner of Select Windows: “We are growing as an organization and wanted to expand our production facilities with new machinery, but this would also increase our power needs. This presented a major challenge as the grid operator told us that a larger connection was not possible for the time being.” Thanks to cooperation with installation partner VANDERLAAN and Intercel, Select Windows’ ambition was nevertheless achieved – without depending on grid expansion.

Cellpower as a scalable and efficient solution

Matthew Marrees, project manager of process technology at VANDERLAAN, says: “We were approached by GevelNed. They had bought a new machine park and wanted to connect it, but it was not going to work with the current grid connection. Then we started to engineer together with Intercel how we could shape the solution for this and how we could make it as practical as possible for GevelNed, so that they could still run the machinery.”

“We went looking for a scalable and efficient solution,” says Pavlos Xanthopoulos, business unit manager of Energy Storage Systems at Intercel. He continues: “After research and analysis, it then turned out that our Cellpower Energy Storage System (CESS) 233 – 100 was a suitable solution. The installation allows Select Windows to implement the desired expansion of production.” The battery storage system takes care of peaks in power consumption.

“A lot of our customers are facing the problem of grid congestion. That’s a common challenge throughout Noord Holland. Cellpower is a very good product that we can use to solve those problems.”

Peak shaving with a battery energy storage system

Pavlos continues: “Battery energy storage systems offer manufacturing plants a way out of long waiting times. The system reads from the gross electricity production meter what power is consumed and needed in the plant. Based on this continuous readout, the battery’s EMS independently determines when to step in to provide more capacity and when not needed or to store unused capacity for later.”

“So suppose the grid can supply 100 kW and only 80 kW is consumed at any given time, there is 20 kW left to further charge the battery. When 130 kW is consumed at a later time, when the grid can only supply 100 kW, the battery jumps in to supply the remaining 30 kW.” This method of smoothing out peaks in power consumption is called peak shaving.

Quick installation and seamless collaboration

The installation of the energy storage system went according to plan. Intercel not only supplied the battery, but also ensured a quick and efficient installation. Marrees explains: “Intercel spent one day to install, configure and connect the energy storage system. That did run very smoothly. Logistically it was very well organized from Intercel, with clear agreements and a flexible planning. Intercel honors agreements, offers good support, including engineering, deals with your questions in a timely manner and really comes up with a good product. A reliable Dutch manufacturer. We certainly expect many more great projects to come out of this in the future,” concludes Marrees.

Power for growth and expansion

Theo van Gorkom, owner of Select Windows and GevelNed, sees the benefits of the new system: “The Cellpower energy storage system has now been installed and provides us with the additional power we need when our grid connection is not sufficient. Thanks to this solution, we can supply our new machinery with sufficient power and continue our production plans without delay.”
