Why energy storage?

Herko Vastgoed is a real estate company that manages several commercial properties in Amersfoort. These properties house about 15 tenants, ranging from retailers and catering establishments to service providers, with dynamic energy consumption. “We have a lot of solar panels and are seeing increasing power demand from our tenants, including the use of charging stations and professional equipment. Suddenly we were at our limits,” says Den Hertog.

Requesting a larger grid connection was not an option because of grid congestion. “We wanted to raise our contract, but that proved impossible. Then we had to look for another solution.” A smart energy storage system proved to be the most effective choice.

Since the installation, Herko Vastgoed has experienced much less peak load. “After a start-up phase, adjusting the EMS to our consumption, everything is now running perfectly. We store excess solar energy and use it at peak times. That helps tremendously.”

In addition, the system offers financial benefits:“Because we have more control over our own consumption, we need to feed less back into the grid and optimize our energy use.”

Energy trading as the next step?

Den Hertog is already looking beyond peak shaving. “If we have a structural surplus of energy, we may be able to participate in the imbalance market. That would be financially interesting.”

That energy storage is the future, he is certain.“I was recently at a meeting with business owners and grid operators. Everyone has the same problem: the power grid is full. Stedin cries that we have to adjust all kinds of things, but without energy storage systems, I don’t see many solutions.”
