TommyTomato prevents peak load with Cellpower energy storage system
At TommyTomato’s new production site in Utrecht, an energy storage system from Intercel allows the company to run without restrictions. TommyTomato delivers healthy vegetable lunches to elementary school and prepares these meals fresh daily on site. During the morning hours, the ovens run at full power, leading to significant spikes in energy consumption. The existing grid connection could not handle this peak load, making a solution necessary.
Energy storage prevents overrun of grid capacity
To avoid the possibility that the furnaces could not all be used at the same time – or that the company would face high penalties and energy costs – an energy storage system from Intercel with a capacity of 233 kWh and an output of 116 kW was chosen. This system stores and returns energy at times of peak consumption, keeping the grid load within limits.

Fast delivery and seamless cooperation
Delivery and installation of the system proceeded at a rapid pace. Intercel worked closely with TommyTomato to ensure that the system would be operational well before the official opening on March 1.
“With our energy storage system, we offer a solution that not only reduces peak loads, but is also scalable for future expansion. This enables companies to optimize their processes without additional grid connection investments,” said Marvin Sewbalak, ESS Account Manager at Intercel.
Symbolic contribution to the mission
In appreciation of TommyTomato’s partnership and social purpose, Intercel donated 1,000 additional healthy meals to children participating in the program. TommyTomato is committed to making all children vegetable eaters for life. They do this with hot vegetable lunches, nutrition education and cooking classes. Over 31,000 children now benefit from the offerings every week, with the goal: healthy eating for every child, regardless of parents’ wallets.
